I really havent had a chance to work on the Roadster much this winter.  I’ve been really sick ever since the Hunnert Car.  I’m feeling good tonight… and figured I had better update my site.  I did pick up some new parts for the Roadster.  I was lucky enough to score a NOS Schiefer bonded face flywheel!  I also picked up a NOS Hurst conversion kit for the Lasalle transmission to adapt the Hurst Yo-Yo shifter…  had Hurst make custom SLICKS… and more…

Pic of the HURST Firestone whitewall pie-crust cheaters…  Bad ASS…  I wanted my slicks to be close to 29″ tall, 6″ wide and 15″ to fit the mags.  They nailed it.  These are 6″ wide!  I had them run a single cheater groove down the middle just like the show rods in the little books…

Got a steering hoop… and had the spring shop make me a reversed eye spring…  Its back up on its wheels again!

Heres a close up of the F-1 box.  I pruned the bracket off the case and sleeved the frame for a flat U-Bolt.  Bolt is recessed so you can’t see the nuts unless the frame is upside down.  Much Cleaner and I get the box out of the way of the starter…

I made a mad dash to try and get the Ranch in paint before the trip.  I got close.  Primer was good enough…  I found a single axle car trailer in Kansas, Kev went and picked it up…   I left from Northern Minnesota and Picked up Kevin, the trailer and his coupe and we left for Austin Speed Shop.  The plan was to work on it for a week… and thats what happened…  We have the whole story in a thread on the Jalopy Journal.  Link below…  its a good read… with some great pics!

So… my quest for a shifter has ended…  with the holy grail of hurst[tm]  I think the box art is just as cool as the shifter itself.  This was one of the the first new style Hurst shifters that came out in 1959 and ran to 1962…  It has a barrel style acrylic handle with the numbers 1-2-3 and R in a H pattern in the fluorescent acrylic…  super-rad.  Brand new in the box…

Ok… so I had to put the engine/trans in here to get a good look at where my pedals are gonna fit.  I have 39 pedals that I can mount that look like they’ll just fit with a mount offset of the X member… should work perfect.  I really really wanted to run the floor pedals.  I’m just not a big fan of hanging pedals… I dunno… just the look of floor pedals I think.

I’m looking for HURST motor mounts for this hemi, if you have some… please email me.

I would love a HURST shifter as well… but I have a mystery T shifter… it has a big T stamped on it… maybe it stands for TUCK?

PIE-CUT!

I pie cut the X-member…  measured fifty times… and tweaked, ground and adjusted until the X-member looked like it was at home… 

Its RAD.

 

 

I first cut the crossmember in three pieces… and notched out the pieces to fit over the flat member and kickup.

I ground it to fit, starting with one side and matching the length to the other… the center I cut in two to open up a little and welded all the pieces together with the tig.  It looks GREAT.  I love the way the frame slants down in the back now.  It gives me more room in the trunk because the corners of the kickup were really close to the deck.

tig welded everything – ill grind and bodywork this frame so it’ll look smooth-

cut the flat crossmember so that it contours with the 37…

The finished product…. I think it looks RAD.  Just needs a little grinding and polish…. and it’ll look its part in candy flake.

 

The X-member is out of a 37 ford, the pedal assembly is out of a 39 ford.  I’m going to use the 39 pedals by modifying this x-member.  I wish I could afford to just have the sand blaster in Harris do it… but he charges crazy money. 

I can’t wait to get this X-member finished so I can mock up the hemi and lasalle trans…  Seriously, I can’t wait… 

I didnt take pics… but I started to modify a 37 ford rear crossmember to fit over the ugly home-made crossmember…  it’ll make more sense when you see pics… 

I Z’d the front of the chassis yesterday after I ran out of sand sandblasting the roadster chassis- 

I did a simple 45 degree angle/ stack… the Z sits behind the firewall so you wont see it.  I think I’m going to make a flat crossmember in back… altough I’ve been tempted to run an A spring just because I like the way it looks… but I’m afraid it’ll stick up into the box.  I’m thinking about running a 39 front spring in the back like I’m doing on the roadster.

This truck gets me excited…  its gonna be rad.

 

After seeing some tires hurst made for a friend Todd who lives in Milwaukee… (his 60′s modela coupe pictured above)  we were talking about how cool it would be if they made rear slicks with double whites too, even the white red white stripes that you see on some vintage slicks.  It puts it in the right show car era…  1962 on…  -my roadster is aiming for the the 63 show circut.

Well someone beat us to the idea… but I’m glad they did… because I’m dead set on getting a set for my roadster.  I think I might have him grind in 3 rings on the rear slick and run 2 on the front-  3′s and 5′s are always better groupings.  That and a single groove in the tire tread right down the middle of the slick… 

I think ideal would be a white strip/red stripe/white stripe…  but I have no idea how they would run the red-

These slicks RULE…  and so does HURST for making them.
